The Christian Duty of Citizenship
Religious liberty is not merely one freedom among many. It is the first freedom because it speaks to the deepest part of man: the conscience before God. Before a person speaks, votes, serves, works, builds, or leads, he must first be free to worship God according to conviction. A nation that protects religious liberty protects the soul of its people. A nation that weakens religious liberty eventually weakens every other liberty that depends upon truth, conscience, responsibility, and moral courage.
The American experiment was built upon the conviction that our rights do not originate from government. They are endowed by our Creator. Government does not create religious liberty; it is entrusted with the duty to recognize and protect it. The First Amendment declares that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. That protection is not a minor legal detail. It is a wall of defense around the God-given right of every citizen to believe, worship, speak, assemble, and live according to conscience.
For Christians, religious liberty is not simply the right to gather inside a church building on Sunday morning. It is the liberty to live all of life under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. It includes the freedom to preach the Gospel, teach biblical truth, raise our children in the fear and admonition of the Lord, serve our neighbors, speak into the moral questions of the day, and participate in public life without being told to leave our faith at the church door.
This is the burden and calling behind Action Mission Ministry. Action Mission exists to encourage, equip, and engage Christians to live out a strong biblical worldview in their homes, churches, communities, and nation. Its work is rooted in the belief that America’s founding principles cannot be preserved by silence, passivity, or fear. They must be taught, understood, defended, and practiced by citizens who recognize that liberty is both a gift and a stewardship.
Through Action Mission, we have taught the principles of Christian duty, religious liberty, civic responsibility, and constitutional citizenship in numerous churches, political units, and activist groups over years of ministry. These teachings remind believers that voting is not merely a political act; it is an act of stewardship. Volunteerism is not merely community involvement; it is neighbor-love in action. Public office is not merely a career path; it can be a platform for servant leadership, justice, righteousness, and the common good.
For too long, many Christians have been told that faith and public life must be separated. While the institutional church must never lose its primary mission of preaching Christ, discipling believers, and proclaiming the Gospel, Christians themselves are not called to retreat from the public square. Jesus called His people salt and light. Salt must touch what it preserves. Light must shine where darkness exists. The Christian citizen must therefore understand both the duties and the privileges of serving his country.
Religious liberty must be defended because it is always one generation away from being misunderstood, neglected, or surrendered. When pastors are intimidated into silence, congregations lose clarity. When Christians are taught that civic engagement is somehow unspiritual, communities lose moral leadership. When believers do not vote, volunteer, serve, or consider public office, decisions are still made—but often by those with no regard for biblical truth.
Action Mission helps churches address this gap with biblical, practical, and constitutional training. A weekend seminar provides a strong foundation for pastors and congregations. These seminars teach the biblical basis for Christian citizenship, the meaning of religious liberty, the proper relationship between church and state, the rights and responsibilities of believers, and the practical steps Christians can take to serve their communities faithfully. The goal is not to turn the pulpit into a partisan platform. The goal is to preserve the pulpit while mobilizing the church to live faithfully in the world.
Just as important, Action Mission provides monthly follow-up to assist pastors as they lead their congregations. A single event can inspire, but ongoing support helps build culture. Pastors need tools, encouragement, clarity, and structure as they disciple people to think biblically about citizenship. Monthly follow-up allows the principles taught in a weekend seminar to become part of the regular life of the church through prayer, teaching, voter awareness, volunteer opportunities, community service, and leadership development.
The central message is simple: Christian duty does not end at personal morality. It extends into family, church, neighborhood, city, state, and nation. A Christian who understands religious liberty also understands responsibility. We are free to worship, but we are also called to witness. We are free to speak, but we are also called to speak truth in love. We are free to vote, but we are also called to vote with wisdom, conscience, and accountability before God.
America needs churches that are spiritually alive and civically awake. This does not mean churches should become political machines. It means they should become centers of biblical formation, moral courage, and community service. A healthy church teaches people how to love God, love their families, love their neighbors, and serve their country. These duties are not in conflict when they are ordered rightly under Christ.
Religious liberty also protects the church from government overreach. It reminds civil authorities that there is a King higher than any earthly ruler. The state has an important role, but it is not God. It cannot command the conscience, redefine truth, replace the family, or silence the church. When government respects religious liberty, it acknowledges its own limits. When it violates religious liberty, it begins to claim authority that belongs to God alone.
That is why the work of Action Mission matters. It is not about anger, fear, or political ambition. It is about stewardship. It is about teaching Christians to understand the times and respond faithfully. It is about helping pastors lead with courage and wisdom. It is about reminding congregations that the blessings of liberty must be preserved by people willing to pray, teach, vote, volunteer, serve, and lead.
As Pastor Joshua Daniel Pratt, Founder of Action Mission Ministry, my conviction is that religious liberty is both a sacred inheritance and a present responsibility. We honor those who came before us not merely by admiring their courage, but by exercising our own. We serve future generations not merely by enjoying our freedoms, but by defending and passing them on.
Religious liberty is not self-sustaining. It must be cherished in the heart, taught in the church, protected in law, and practiced in public life. The Christian citizen must rise to this hour with humility, conviction, and action. Under God, with courage and faithfulness, we can preserve liberty, strengthen churches, serve communities, and help restore a nation in need of truth.
